Like Wendell, the subject of “Catch of the Day: The Adventures of a Mississippi River Man,” Stephen Goerdt grew up with a passion for catching critters—butterflies, frogs, turtles, rabbits, ground squirrels, fish—you name it. He still dabbles in hunting and fishing, but his real passion now is focusing a lens on those who get their hands dirty harvesting the great outdoors.
Stephen has lived in Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Florida—always close to a river, lake, or sea. He currently lives on a farm just outside Dubuque, IA, seven miles from the banks of the Mississippi. He has a thing about “surf and turf.”
Stephen has a B.A. in English from the University of Northern Colorado and an M.A. in English from the University of Chicago. He has been a Reading and Study Skills instructor at the University of Dubuque since 2008.
“Catch of the Day: The Adventures of a Mississippi River Man” is a photo-packed portrait of a Dubuque, IA, "river rat" who has fished, hunted, and trapped the Mississippi River for more than 50 years. See Wendell, the “old man and the river,” as he checks his nets for catfish and turtles and comments on his life and times on the Mississippi. 132 pages. 230 photos & illustrations! Color.
